HM the Queen speaking French

Created by Michel one year ago

HM the Queen Elisabeth II will live in my memories forever.

As far as I can recall, on 13 February 1991, I was fortunate to be one of the students gathering
in London House for the much-awaited royal visit, bearing in mind a few dos and don’ts.

Contrary to what might be assumed, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh did not arrive to a
fanfare of trumpets, but rather with a great deal of warmth and affection, making everyone
feel comfortable as a result. Then the royal couple started talking individually with us standing
along two rows.

When the Queen came to me and listened to what I was saying about my studies at Université
de la Sorbonne-Nouvelle and University of London, unexpectedly and with a gentle smile, she
said in French “moitié français, moitié anglais” (half French, half English). What a lovely story,
and I think it would be a shame to keep it for myself!

In closing, I would like to say:

Rest in peace Ma’am
